Here are some highlights from Day 1 of Pitchfork 2008. I made my way to as many stages as possible, but since I was late, these are the bands that I saw. Saturday morning was met with massive rain showers that died down around 2pm. The rain left the Field humid and muddy, more on that later. The crowd of sweaty, dancing hipsters were treated to many great performances.
Dizzee Rascal surprised the crowd with an upbeat set that demanded dancing despite the blazing sun and humidity. !!! kept the dance party going with an amazing set. Singers Nic Offer, and I believe Shannon Funchess, were the most entertaining performers of the day. Best set of the day has to go to Jarvis Cocker. He is a pro. It might have been the cooling effect of the night air rolling in, or the beer catching up with me, but Jarvis's set was quite moving, politicol, and very entertaining. Most disapointing set of the day, goes to Vampire Weekend. All but the last two songs sounded off tempo and sloppy. I am still a fan, and have heard about great live shows from the Columbia University grads. Once they hit their stride, the mass that was still waiting patiently started dancing like mad and rolling (& jumping) in the mud.
